To the Military Government of Burma Hong Kong Democratic Party condemns detention and trial of Aung San Suu Kyi We come here today to protest against the Burmese military government for its continued political persecution of Aung San Suu Kyi, opposition leader and Nobel laureate, who has been put under house arrest for the last 6 years.Ms Suu Kyi and her political party National League for Democracy (NLD) won the general election in 1990 but the military government illegally denied the result of the election and further subjected Ms Suu Kyi and her colleagues to political persecution, including arrest, detention, prosecution and imprisonment.

The Order for house arrest for which Ms Suu Kyi is presently serving will expire on May 27 when she should be free and able to take part in the election to be held next year. Presently the Burmese Government is attempting to charge Ms Suu Kyi for breaking the order of house arrest because a person had recently sneaked into her residence although without her consent. The charge is blatantly contrived with the aim to continue to deprive Ms Suu Kyi’s freedom of movement by imprisoning her and hence denying her right to take part in the forthcoming election. Shame to the Burmese Government!

The Democratic Party shares the concern of Ms Suu Kyi’s supporters that the charges would give the junta an excuse to continue to keep their most formidable opponent incarcerated, at least until after elections that are due to be held early next year. We condemn the illegal and unjust detention and secret trial of Ms Suu Kyi, and call on the military government to release her immediately. We pledge our support to Ms Suu Kyi and the long suffering Burmese people and hope that democracy will prevail in Burma.

We condemn the barbaric and authoritarian military and join other voices in Hong Kong and in the international community to fight for freedom and democracy in Burma. The Burmese Government must know that the whole world is watching! The international community must be ready to intervene to stop the oppression of the Burmese people! Burma must restore democracy and return power to its People now and without delay! Free Burma! Free Aung San Suu Kyi! Power to the Burmese People!
