Statement

To serve or not to serve LegCo for another year:
Democratic Party will abide by the conclusion of a credible poll

The Democratic Party announced today we will commission a professional, independent and credible opinion research organization to conduct a representative city-wide poll on whether we should serve Legislative Council (LegCo) for another year. We will abide by the conclusion of the poll.

The Democratic Party expressed earlier that we were more inclined towards serving LegCo for another year in order to counter government’s evil laws. Feedback from the public indicated that the issue is deeply controversial, so much so it is threatening the hard-earned unity from the Anti-Extradition movement last year. This is the last thing the Democratic Party wants to see, which is why in order to mend the divisions within the Democratic camp and unite all fronts, the Party has decided to conduct a poll on whether we should serve LegCo for another year.

The Democratic Party hopes to organize more than one public debate session to debate on the issue. The Democratic Party hopes to make the public understand the risks giving up our presence at the Legislature would bring, which includes the government joining forces with the pro-establishment camp to expediate the passing of Article 23, change the methods for the selection of the Chief Executive and LegCo, setting up polling stations in Greater Bay Area, moving forward with the Lantau Tomorrow Vision etc., all of which could severely harm Hong Kong’s future. The Democratic Party completely understands that by being present at the Legislature, we can only complicate or delay the passing of evil laws, however, the presence is crucial in mobilizing the public and drawing international attention to the issues at hand. We hope the public can participate in this important decision together and face the risks and consequences of the outcome.

The Democratic Party believes the Pro-Democracy movement’s success depends on multiple factors, all of which help play a part in shaping Hong Kong’s fate. At this defining moment, we are letting the public decide Hong Kong’s future. Securing the public’s mandate to serve or not to serve LegCo for another year is the most effective way to unite all parties and divisions within the Democratic camp.
