Arrested for mediating at scene
HUI Chi-fung slams Police for making arbitrary arrests
Democratic Party Legislative Councillor HUI Chi-fung, who instituted several private prosecutions against police brutality, was arrested at his home at 6am this morning by police officers from the New Territories North Region on suspicion of perverting the course of justice, accessing computer with criminal and dishonest intent, and for criminal damage at the scene of Tuen Mun protest on 6th July 2019. HUI asked his lawyer to convey the message that he was only at the scene to carry out his duty as a Legislative Councillor by mediating. The accusations make another obvious case of the police swearing black is white and making arbitrary arrests. HUI said he will continue to fight for justice amidst strong suppression from the regime. “Between a high, solid wall and an egg that breaks against it, I will always stand on the side of the egg regardless of the opposition.”
HUI said the fact that the police arrested dozens of people, including Democratic Party Legislative Councillor LAM Cheuk-ting and himself, only demonstrated further that the government is adamant in prosecuting on political grounds to deter Hong Kongers from achieving justice and exercising their rights. He will continue to fight for justice, including monitoring police brutality and instituting private prosecutions against officers who have crossed the line.
HUI expresses regret over the wrong message from the Police Public Relations Branch this morning where it was claimed that he was arrested for rioting in Yuen Long on 21st July 2019. HUI said police should be very meticulous when it comes to making arrests, not only is it rather absurd to get basic facts wrong, it also gets to show police’s standards have huge room for improvement.
